Now it’s your turn! Use what you’ve learned throughout Steps 1-3 to create your own B Corp, or work with a local business to host a fundraiser! An example may be starting your own dog-walking business that donates a portion of the profits to a local shelter. Or, partner with a local pet store to benefit a community pet shelter. The success of the venture or an event will be enhanced when troop members are passionate about the cause
Activity 7 - Plan Your Business for a Better World
As a group, talk about what type of business you would create to help make your community stronger. You may get ideas by researching B Corps and finding real life examples of how businesses are strengthening their communities. Be sure to discuss these questions in your planning session:
• What product or service will you offer?
• How will you make your company a great place to work for your employees?
• How will you make your community better by the way your company is run?
• How will you make the world better with your business?
Once you have thought about your business, create a video explaining what your company does and why your business will be good for your community. Ask your group leader to share this video on social media using #BTheChangePatch – make sure you have your parents’ permission before posting.
Activity 8 - Rethink Your Own Fundraiser
If your group already hosts a fundraiser, rethink it!
Imagine ways in which you can make your own fundraiser more like a B Corp.
• How can you use your fundraiser to solve a problem in your community?
• Can you partner with a local business to tie your fundraiser to your community?
• Can you donate some of your profits back to a worthy cause?
• Can you make your fundraiser greener by recycling the cardboard boxes you use or by including reusable grocery bags with your orders?
Create a video, collage, poster, or presentation with your ideas for your re-imagined, B Corp-focused fundraiser! Don’t forget to tell your group why this idea will be beneficial for both your troop and your community.
Girl Scouts Cookie Donations: Cookie Care Program
Girl Scouts have a tradition of giving back to the community, including giving back with our Cookie Care Program. Girls and troops may choose to participate in one or both options and earn special rewards for their participation.
Troop Donated Cookies
Spread the Girl Scout Cookie love in your community! Your troop can donate Girl Scout Cookies from your troop inventory to a worthy, local organization. Your troop will select a local, non-profit organization to receive the donated cookies. Options include: a local food shelf, shelter, care center, or hospital. We encourage troops to learn about the organization they choose so girls can fully understand how their donation is impacting their community.
Girl Scouts River Valleys Donated Cookies
Girls collect the money for the donated cookies from the customer and turn it into to their Troop Cookie Manager who will record these sales for them. Cookies will be donated on behalf of our girls/troops directly to healthcare workers, school lunch programs, and food pantries throughout the Girl Scouts River Valleys council area.
2022 Koala Krew Patch
Girls may opt to support the Animal Humane Society through the power of Girl Scout Cookies. At the 125-package reward level, girls had the option to make a donation to support animals going through the rescue program with Animal Humane Society. Each girl that participated in this program earned the Koala Krew patch.
BSA Popcorn Donations: Heroes Program
American Heroes Donation Program
When a customer purchases an American Heroes Donation, a portion goes back to local Scouting and the remaining popcorn equivalent is donated to the first responders and U.S. Military. Trail's End has teamed up with Soldiers' Angels to distribute the popcorn to VA Hospitals, National Guard units, and military bases across the country.
Hometown Heroes Donation Program
BSA Councils fill local Hometown Heroes orders.
Bonus Activity - Socially-Responsible Businesses & Consumer Power
TAKE IT A ‘STEP’ FURTHER!
Be a Champ for Socially-Responsible Business Remember, any time you buy something, you have “Consumer Power.” So, start learning about the companies and organizations that are using their business as a force for good. Think about shopping more for what you need, rather than what you want; or better still, think of creative ways to re-use items instead of buying new. If you do shop, try to purchase products and services from companies you know are committed to caring for their employees, their communities, and the planet. Learn more at cabotcheese.coop
