About the Event

In 2024, we plan to bring together in person Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, & Venturers and again Unite for Earth Day at the Orono Nature Center for Education and Conservation.

EARTHDAY.ORG, the global organizer of Earth Day, has announced the global theme for Earth Day 2024: Planet vs. Plastics.

- Unite for Earth Day 2024 will be held at the Orono Nature Center & Learning Pavilion, (Behind Orono Intermediate & Elementary Schools), 685 N. Old Crystal Bay Road, Long Lake, MN.  Check-in/out at the Pavilion.  Please park in actual parking areas and respect the "No Parking" signs on the road.

- This is a come when you can and stay however long you would like between 2:30 and 8 pm.  Some groups will choose to come together at a designated time.  Please provide appropriate supervision for your scouts/children.  Our event is open to scouts, family, and friends.

- Please dress appropriately for the weather and to work.  Work gloves are recommended.  Please bring a filled water bottle and an optional snack for yourself.

- For Education, we will offer activity stations to complete Cabot Creamery's Small Steps Toward Sustainability patch program.

  • Cabot’s Small Steps Toward Sustainability program encourages all groups to make small changes toward a more sustainable home and community.  The activities teach kids how to reduce energy and food waste, to reuse food scraps with composting, and to recycle and up-cycle common items. By the end, groups should understand what sustainability is and how it can make your community (and planet) healthier.  Free patches (100 available) and goodies are provided upon completion.
  • For Daisy Girl Scouts (K-1st Grade), there is also an opportunity for Daisies to complete their Rose "Make the World a Better Place" Petal with their leaders/adults.  Learn how you can make a difference in the world around you and beyond.

- For Conservation, it will be our annual clean-up at the Orono Nature Center.  Various activities will be designated with areas in need of clean-up.  One popular activity of pulling Buckthorn will return as an option using the Wood Weed Wrenches.

  • Scouts BSA & Venturers are able to use the time spent for Conservation or Service hours needed for advancement and badges.
  • Girl Scouts are able to use the time spent for badge requirements when appropriate.
  • Cadette/Senior/Ambassador Girl Scouts may use the hours toward Service to Community Bars.
  • Volunteers may be able to use this for High School or other organizations Volunteer Hour requirements.
  • Everyone gets to feel the satisfaction of doing good and making a difference, while making new friends.

- Supporters: If you would like to help run a station and/or are part of a business/organization that would like to contribute their support to our event, please contact our event organizer at uniteforearthday@gmail.com.
